AND I ASSERT THAT THERE ARE
MANY LOUSY PRINCIPALS AND
TOO FEW REALLY GOOD ONES.

In this data-frenzied budget
crunching time, we only hear
the problems in getting
funding. After our long
election year trying to get
change at the MDUSD, I
am reminded, once again, of
the issue of staff morale on
sites due to a misplaced
principal or an
administrator who should not
have the role at all.
A recent study from the
Teachers College Record
suggests that principal
preparation may in fact be
less than satisfactory.
Needless to say, give the
push for teacher
accountability over the last
decade, I applaud the idea
of principal accountability.
As the budget items get
settled, it is my hope that the MDUSD will begin to examine the role
principals play at each site and find out the degree of strength or
weakness they provide. I have met many idiotic principals who
are more concerned with their egos and avoiding conflict as they
edge closer to retiring, than dealing with site issues. And I have
worked for some, too. In fairness, I have also met some outstanding
principals that need to have recognition for doing a tough job well.
These are principals who have the respect of their staff, even when
they are in disagreement on a matter of procedure. Under the
current district administration, I have found most principals to do
their very best to not rock the big boat, after all who wants the
ire from above, especially at the politburo where, as the last board
meeting suggested, more concern is placed on retaining bureaucrats
than site staff. I have seen principals who will privately
disagree with the district direction under the superintendent, yet
stand at a district function and applaud his speeches, such is the
climate of fear and mistrust.
I invite parents and
teachers who read this blog to add their input about their
principals. Please only use names if you have something positive to
say. If you have negative things to say about your principal, that's
fine, just avoid using a name. Also, read the TCR article

plan to get an administrative credential with that goal in mind.
