school measures its success
in many ways -- standardized
achievement
scores are higher
than those at the three
largest Providence high
schools -- but parents are
most excited by these
statistics:
Almost every senior gets
into college,
80 percent go to college,
and five years later,
most of those students are
still in college or have
graduated."
So imagine a better way to
teach students - a school
setting that emphasizes work
in the real world, something
that I have been shouting
about for awhile now.
These schools in Rhode
Island have had the courage
to test out this education
model with much success. And
with a REAL WORLD, setting
you are engaging financial
support from businesses and
with business in mind.
Couple this with the idea
for each school to be
financially independent and
you have a reform idea that
should find a lot of
popularity. The
question is, how do we make
this work in California?
How can we start changing
the system.
Today, Barak Obama called
for an end to wasteful
programs, to systems that do
not work. As a society, our
priority needs to be on
getting our children to be
the most advanced, globally
competitive, productive
citizens they can be.
After years of Leaving
Children Behind while
claiming not to, after
billions of wasted dollars
to humor politats, we
have a system that is
broken. Instead of fixing
it, we are now asked to
break it even more with the
additional budget cuts
because of the state's
fiscal incompetence.
Change begins with a demand
for change. If these R.I.
schools can show a different
education model with
excellent results, surely we
can develop a first step to
change the programs we are
clinging to, destroy the
bureaucracy that feeds into
them, and get some actual
learning into the education
system.
