ARE WE HEADED FOR A VIETNAM
IN AFGHANISTAN? OBAMA/BIDEN
ANTICIPATE A MILITARY
INCREASE....

Despite the revel in a new
presidency, the specter of
an increased military
conflict in Afghanistan
certainly detracts from the
optimism that we have felt
recently. The
Obama administration is
considering double the U.S.
force in Afghanistan to more
than 60,000 troops within 18
months. While the logic
behind it may seem to
suggest that an added
military can subvert the
advance of al-Qaeda, the
problem with Afghanistan
lies in the long and bloody
history of that country that
has seen its share of
invaders, most of whom
ultimately left defeated.
This included Alexander the
Great, the British, the
Soviets to name a few.
Given the fact that our
military effect is far
different from our military
affectation, one has to
wonder whether this is a
battle that we should be
undertaking, especially
given our already huge
national debt, about to grow
even larger with an economic
stimulus, and with a global
economy dancing in tandem
with us on the lake of
recession.
It would seem that
prevention of another attack
on US soil might be better
served by finding ways to
shore up our national
solidarity, not to mention
the cracks in our border
policies, immigration
policies and those few of us
left who believe that
privacy is a right we have
not already abandoned in our
credit addiction and endless
gathering of "marketing
data."
It would seem to make more
sense to make the country
strong from within and
develop a better security
intelligence to detect and
thwart those who enter with
the purpose of destruction,
rather than contributing to
it elsewhere. Of
course some will see that
statement as pacifistic in
nature; however given how
stretched we are in all
areas, any defeat in a
militaristic venture would
have a crushing blow upon
the country.
