$55 MILLION DOLLAR DEFICIT FOR THE MDUSD. CAN YOU SAY PACK IT IN AND CALL IT QUITS?

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

From Supt. Gary McHenry: "Fifty-five million dollars. Nearly one-third of what the Mt. Diablo Unified School District is currently spending on employee salaries. Fifty-five million dollars. The amount of the deficit our District would be facing in June 2011 under the budget Governor Schwarzenegger proposed for 2009-10 on New Year's Eve."

It looks like the worst is ahead, waiting for the Terminator to act. In this district where the recent six and a half million reductions already took a toll, ask yourself where this insanity will end?

I have heard debates about funding increases, parcel tax and other bake-sale ideas designed to increase a revenue stream that is rapidly drying up. What I have not heard is a radical revision of the way we do business when it comes to education.

Last year I declared "War on Education." This was not a grand stand method of gaining publicity. It was a statement that is already resonated throughout the education community; the education model is broken and needs a major overhaul. In fact, it needs to be replaced.

The goal of educational systems is to prepare our future workers. This is NOT what we are doing. What we are doing is passing through a political directive of assumed learning, masked by a ridiculous form of assessment, all in the name of improving education. Well we have not improved education. Our schools are out of control. Students are in charge. Value systems have eroded and schools retain no controls over the inmates other than expulsion which they are loathe to do. It needs to stop.

We are not globally competitive. We are not fiscally sound. We have nothing to offer our future generations in the way of American made products and we have lost the edge that we had once as trailblazers. In short, we are rapidly become candidates for extinction.

We need an education system that is lean, effective and tight on skills-based learning.  We need to get rid of the lawyers pushing the equality syndrome - nature does not work that way. We have no room for people who get hired because of entitlement.  We need workers of skill who have a stake in the future of the country. We do not need any more saggy pants whose only fixation is how many pins they can stick in their face and what video games they will be playing.

So when I hear that the current education system may die under the budget cuts of Arnold, I have mixed feelings. Change is always painful. But it is time for change.  This is a nation that had always prided itself on survival.  It is time to survive. Break out the 3 R's. Cancel any excuses. Force students and parents to make a difference in the future. There should be no discussion.  The feel good system of today sucks, and frankly we need a few kids with bruised egos to start pushing themselves harder to improve.  There is a ton of room for improvement.

What we need now are ideas. We need voices to stand up and suggest ways to overhaul it all. While the politats talk budget reductions we should be talking renovation.

This is America, dammit! Now get up and do something. That's my five-cents worth.

OTHER STUFF FROM
MisterWriter

Here are things that I have had some experience with and have decided that they are worth sharing. Most come from third party sites. Sometimes I will post something that I am offering directly. Enjoy
-----------------

HYPNOSIS - it's not just for people who want to cluck like a chicken.

Starting in 2008 I went to see a licensed hypno therapist. I was feeling stressed out and had an ongoing battle with blood pressure that I did not wish to medicate for.  I spend six sessions of about an hour a piece and do believe that I benefitted from it.

As a result I also discovered Hypnosis Downloads.com. Here, for a small fee, I could download hypnotic sessions in MP3 format and target specific things in my life I wanted to improve. They have hundreds of topics to choose from.

Download and listen in the convenience of your home. You get to keep the MP3 and use it whenever you want.  Stress, anxiety, weight loss, self-confidence are just some of the many sessions available. I am not suggesting (no pun intended) that you stop any medication you are on - you should always consult with your doctor, however, you should  check out the site and see just what it can do for you. Sample sessions are available online. I think you will be impressed.

RESPERATE - it's not just for blood pressure; it is an excellent tool to help you relax so completely...

At the same time as I started looking into hypnosis, I also purchased a Resperate device.  This device helps you to regulate your breathing in a natural, soothing way that leaves you totally relaxed and your blood pressure at lower levels. There is no medication involved. The premise is that stress and lifestyle caused your problems, so by making total relaxation a part of your regular lifestyle, you can bring everything back to the norm.

The unit comes with a money back guarantee - I still have mine and use it three plus times a week. It takes 15 minutes, runs off a few AA batteries and is very portable. Even if your blood pressure is fine, this is a great de-stress item, cheaper than an hour massage and less toxic than other forms of relief.
